As a collaborative network of eating disorder specialists, our vision is to increase community awareness of local, regional and national eating disorder treatment resources as a means of better supporting the needs of those in our area impacted by anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, ARFID and OSFED (other specified feeding and eating disorders).
Seeing an eating disorder specialist is crucial for comprehensive treatment tailored to the complexities of these conditions. While general mental health counselors offer valuable support, specialists have undergone extensive training and possess insight into the unique challenges of eating disorders. Without proper expertise, misdiagnosis and ineffective treatment may occur, leading to worsed symptoms and prolonged suffering.
Registered dietitians are integral to eating disorder recovery, offering expert nutritional guidance and support tailored to individual needs. They develop personalized meal plans, promote balanced nutrition and mindful eating, address nutritional deficiencies, and collaborate with the treatment team for holistic care, fostering long-term success in reclaiming a healthy relationship with food and body.
The physician's role in outpatient treatment for eating disorders is especially crucial, as many complications can arise as a result of malnutrition and compensatory behaviors. Physicians will determine patients' medical stability, addressing issues like nutritional deficiencies and cardiac concerns while collaborating with the multidisciplinary treatment team. Specialists in the field will follow the Medical Care Guidelines established by the Academy of Eating Disorders.
